Spider Woman’s Teachings
Spider Woman’s teachings Na’ashjé’ii Asdzáá bina’nitin - as a Diné womxn who comes from a lineage of weavers on both sides of my family, I was inspired to create rug designs through my beadwork. In Diné stories, Spider Woman provided the start of how to live life in Hozhó and to create beauty in our own lives. She was the first to weave a web of the universe, creating a map of patterns of spirits through her weaving. Spider Woman had the ability to create beautiful things. Her teachings of weaving with care and thought, is what inspired this piece.
I chose the Two Grey Hills design, Chief’s blanket, the Tree of Life and a Red Mesa Design style to bead this piece. Each of these rug designs I sketched, created and beaded with the thought of what Spider Woman was gifted and how we as Diné carry on her teachings. This piece is my beaded interpretation of Spider Woman’s Teachings.
The weaving tools attached to the hat band are wood pieces that I whittled by hand and I used loom string as a hat band to tie the whole piece together .
